Knowledge (knowledge and comprehension):
– upon completion of the study programme the graduate demonstrates basic and in-depth knowledge characteristic of the field of science of music and of the profession of musicologist and has comprehensive knowledge in:
– development tendencies and regularities of professional music, development strategies and planning methods in the field of music, scientific research methods.
Furthermore, competencies in history of music, music theory, analysis of form of music, styles of music interpretation and methods of music theory subjects tuition correspond to the highest level of musicologist’s profession.
The graduates demonstrate understanding of the fundamental concepts and terminology used in the field of music pedagogy:
– of the significance of means of musical expression in the process of composing, and are able to evaluate interpretation of a piece of music and the technical and artistic level of the performance.
Skills (knowledge application skills, communication skills, general skills):
– as a result of studies, the graduate is able to independently and responsibly undertake the duties of a musicologist and a professional education music teacher – to apply his/her knowledge in the field of the musicology based on the main traditions and the latest discoveries;
– to explain the regularities in music development, to analyse and to evaluate music pieces of different epochs and styles, to run concert lectures, and demonstrate pieces of music or their sections, to preserve Latvian musical culture heritage;
– to cooperate with cultural and educational institutions, musicians, music collectives and their managers, choreographers and composers in order to facilitate integration of Latvian music into the culture life of the world, to organize and plan his/her own creative and research activities;
– to develop professional music education programmes, study programmes for music schools and secondary music schools, to evaluate and analyse skills and knowledge acquired by students during the process of studies, to explain methodology of learning, to compare interpretation of musical pieces, to define aims and tasks of the study course, to analytically approach information, problem issues and solutions in the fields of music and musicology;
– to explain various concepts of these fields and to discuss these concepts convincingly with professionals and non-professionals.
Graduate is able to independently manage his/her own and his/her student’s learning processes, to organize further self-education and professional development, to demonstrate scientific approach in problem solving processes;
– to assume responsibilities and initiatives in individual work, team work or whilst leading the work of other people, to make decisions and to find creative solutions in changing or uncertain circumstances.
Graduates can speak the official state language and at least two foreign languages, and have learned to comply with legal documents and regulations of work safety, fire safety and environmental safety.
Competencies (analysis, synthesis and evaluation):
– graduate is able to independently acquire, select, analyse and apply information within the fields of musicology and music pedagogy;
– to make decisions and to solve problems within the context of the musicologist’s profession, to demonstrate comprehension of the professional ethics of teacher;
– to evaluate the role of music within social environment and to participate in the development of the fields of professional music and culture education.
